With the buzz surrounding the recently announced film about Milton Hershey set to premiere in 2026, I’ve found myself reflecting on how his legacy has influenced my personal and professional journey.
For many, Milton Hershey is known as the chocolate magnate. But for me—and for so many others who have been fortunate enough to attend the Milton Hershey School—his and Catherine Hershey’s legacy is far more profound. It’s a legacy of generosity, of community empowerment, and of unwavering belief in the potential of every child.
As the founder of Catalillies Play Cafe, I carry that legacy with me every day. My time at Milton Hershey School was transformational. It wasn’t just an education—it was an experience rooted in compassion, service, and a commitment to building something larger than oneself. I was surrounded by a community that believed in second chances, that invested deeply in its students, and that created real, measurable change in people’s lives. That experience didn’t just shape who I am; it shaped how I see the world and what I feel called to contribute to it.
When my family began to envision Catalillies Play Cafe, we approached the process not with profitability as our primary goal, but with a deep sense of purpose. We asked ourselves: What does our community truly need? How can we fill a gap while also creating something sustainable, inclusive, and impactful?
Our answer was to create a space that not only offered a unique play experience for children, but also served as a platform for strengthening the bonds among local families, businesses, and visitors. We envisioned a gathering place that encourages connection—where parents can share concerns, resources, and support while their children play, learn, and grow.
At the heart of our mission are three core goals:
Build Real Community by Bringing Families Together: We believe that when families have a place to gather, share, and engage with one another, a true sense of community emerges—one that is built on shared values, mutual support, and collective growth.
Highlight Local Services and Supporting Small Businesses: Catalillies acts as a hub where we can spotlight local entrepreneurs, partner with organizations doing meaningful work, and amplify the voices of those striving to better our area. When small businesses succeed, the entire community benefits.
Welcome Traveling Families and Encouraging Local Investment: Williamsburg is a destination for many visitors, and we see this as an opportunity. By offering a welcoming space for traveling families, we introduce them to our local businesses and services, helping to drive economic support beyond the typical tourist stops. But most importantly offer them a genuine experience of Williamsburg hospitality away from the rush of lines and tourist pricing.
My hope is simple but deeply heartfelt: that Catalillies Play Cafe becomes more than just a business. That it becomes a catalyst—just as Milton Hershey and the school he built were catalysts in my life. If, during our time in Williamsburg, we are able to inspire even a fraction of the change that Hershey inspired in me, I will consider this endeavor a tremendous success.
So, thank you.
